ClearingHouse vs DoubleAgent
Both get your Stripe payments into FreeAgent. They come at it from different directions, and the right one depends on what you need.
The short version
DoubleAgent is a bookkeeping assistant for FreeAgent. It runs bank rules, matches receipts, spreads invoices over several months, and reconciles your Stripe and GoCardless payouts. It's cheaper than ClearingHouse, and it does a lot more beyond Stripe.
ClearingHouse only does Stripe, and goes deeper on it. Your Stripe invoices are mirrored in FreeAgent line by line, revenue is categorised by the product you sold, and each currency in your Stripe balance gets its own clearing account.
If Stripe is a small part of your business, DoubleAgent is probably the better fit. If Stripe is your business, keep reading.

How each one records your Stripe payments
DoubleAgent works from your payouts. When a payout arrives, it breaks it down and explains it in one of three ways: an invoice for each charge, a sales transaction for each charge, or one combined sale split between UK and everywhere else. Fees are recorded alongside, either per charge or once per payout.
ClearingHouse works from your Stripe balance. It creates a clearing account in FreeAgent for each currency you hold in Stripe, and records every balance transaction in it: charges, fees, refunds, disputes and payouts. When a Stripe invoice is finalised, a matching FreeAgent invoice is created with the same line items, and each line is categorised by the product you sold.
When a payout lands in your bank, ClearingHouse waits for it to appear in your bank feed, then explains it as a transfer from the clearing account. Your clearing account balance should always match your Stripe balance, which makes it easy to spot when something's off.
Which one suits you?
DoubleAgent is the better choice if…
- You want help with your whole FreeAgent account, like bank rules and receipts, not just Stripe.
- You take payments through GoCardless as well as Stripe.
- A summary of each payout is enough detail for your books.
- Price is the deciding factor.
ClearingHouse is the better choice if…
- You bill customers with Stripe invoices or subscriptions and want them in FreeAgent as they are.
- You sell more than one product and want your P&L to show revenue for each.
- You get paid in more than one currency.
- You'd rather see transactions in FreeAgent as they happen, not when the payout arrives.
FAQs
Can I use ClearingHouse and DoubleAgent together?
Not for Stripe. Both would record the same payments, so you'd end up counting your income twice. You could keep using DoubleAgent for bank rules and receipts and switch its Stripe integration off, letting ClearingHouse handle Stripe.
I'm switching from DoubleAgent. What happens to my existing transactions?
They stay where they are. When you set up ClearingHouse, you choose a sync start date and it only imports Stripe transactions from that date onwards. Pick the day after DoubleAgent's last payout so nothing's recorded twice. Read more about choosing a sync start date.
Does ClearingHouse work for accountants?
Yes. Accountants and bookkeepers can manage all of their clients from one account, and invite team members with role-based access. See pricing for details.
